Happy Chinese New Year!

(above) Phil and I decked out in our red and black to celebrate the Chinese New Year. (below) Two mini dancing Chinese dragons...I liked them a lot.
So, the Chinese New Year came and went. Usually, I would have no ties to such an event, except for the fact Phil's work holds quite the happenin' Chinese New Year shin dig. We were even encouraged to wear red and black. Except for the 10 course meal I probably took six bites of (With the power combo of new tastes, being pregnant and chopsticks working against me, this is no surprise), the night was quite enjoyable. They entertained us with dancing Chinese dragons, Kung Fu demonstrations and a Chinese childrens' orchestra.
My second tie to the Chinese New Year (I know you're all thinking, "no way! a second tie!") is that this Chinese year is the year of the boar. Some of you may remember one of my previous posts because I was feeling sorry for myself that I found out I was born in the year of the boar. Well, the pity party is over because I discovered something very cool about the 'year of the boar' or 'year of the pig' so they say. Boar or pig...hmm... pigs are dirty, but pink and nice, so I'll go with pig. Anyhow, not knowing any of my thoughts on this, Phil came home and told me that not only was it the year of the pig, but the 'Year of the Golden Pig'. (Gasp!)
Apparently, he was talking to a co-worker who told Phil this bit of info and said that if you have a baby (it's all making sense now, isn't it) in the Year of the Golden Pig--which might I add, happens every 600 years!--your child will grow up to be very prosperous. Phil said his co-worker said, "yeah, my wife and I are trying really hard to get pregant" followed by one of those laughs that they are joking, but not really.
I Googled this and found this informative tidbit...

"Not too long ago I announced that my wife and I are expecting a baby this year as part of our world domination plans. Adding fuel to our plans is the discovery that this year is a special year according to the Chinese Zodiac.
It is not only the year of the Pig, it is the Year of the Golden Pig. According to Chinese Foklore, this is an event that occurs once in every 600 years and will ensure that a baby born on this year will experience a prosperous and wealthy life.
This legend is so popular, that Korea is expected to have a 10% increase in birth rate this year, which is apparently much needed as its birth rate is extremely low. "
It later when on to say, that there are no facts supporting this myth...but why would I want to talk about that?
Anyhow, here is a "Woo, woo!" to anyone having a baby before February 2008! Asian or not, you apparently have a tie to the Chinese New Year as well.

Beautiful

I read this at work as tears streamed down my face. What an amazing person. What missionary work. Enjoy...

Covering 22 Counties Gladys Knight Tells Floridians, "This is the Light". By Geoffrey Biddulph

Gladys Knight and her 60-person choir of Latter-day Saints gave four performances for more than 5,000 people in southern Florida last week. "This is the way, this is the light", she said in a teary testimony regarding The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Gladys Knight is famous worldwide for such songs as "I Heard it Through the Grapevine" and "Midnight Train to Georgia". Over the weekend, she, along with her choir and a three-person band gave four shows to thousands of members and non-member investigators, who crowded into the Fort Lauderdale Florida stake center building. They heard Knights renditions of "Because I have been Given Much" and "I am a Child of God", as well as several Gospel songs that are not in the Church hymn book. Knight sang several solos, but she also directed several choir members who also took the stage alone. They sang songs such as "Uphold Me with Thy Sweet Spirit" and "Oh, How I Love Jesus" with a swelling choir behind them.

The highlight of the evening was certainly when the famed singer and her husband both gave their testimonies of the restored gospel. "It is indeed a miracle that I belong to this church", Sister Knight said. "The image of the Church in the past has not been conducive to my being here. It shows His hand in motion. An African-American woman: Who knew I would have a calling such as this"? Knight has indeed been given a special calling by the Brethren to travel throughout the world giving her testimony both in \nspeech and through song. Given her fame and her reputation, \nshe may be a vessel for bringing thousands or tens of \nthousands to investigate the Church. Several years \nago, Gladys Knight's son was the first member of her family \nto look at the Church. After he got baptized, her daughter \ncame next. Sister Knight \ndescribed her search for God's true church, which came after \nthe baptism of her children. "I was raised in a \nBaptist home. We spent all day on Sunday at church. I was \nkind of all over the place religiously. I was a Baptist and then \na Catholic and then I went to several other churches. I was \nseeking. There was something good in every one of those \nchurches, but I thought there's got to be more. My daughter \nKenya said, "talk to the \nmissionaries". I fell in love right away. They were \nrespectful, and the first thing they said was, "Can we \npray?" I believe in the power of prayer. They told me, "You \ncheck it out." I got on my knees and asked the Lord, and I got \nmy answer. I couldn't wait for my next lessons. I said I \nwanted to get baptized \ntomorrow". Very soon after that, she was \nbaptized. Her husband, William McDowell, gave an \neloquent and humor-laced testimony about his courtship and \nmarriage to one of the most famous singers \naround. They met because he was the manager of a spa \nin San Diego. \n"As Gladys", said. "The image of the Church in the past has not been conducive to my being here. It shows His hand in motion. Happy February!

We're here, we made it. I think any Seattleite (or anyone with a winter) can agree it feels good to get through January. Not only is one of the coldest months of the year over, but you have a small sense of completion...one down eleven more to go. Or in my case three down, six more to go. Either way, welcome to a new month! February is a good time. It has Valentine's Day, it has Phil's birthday, it has my parents' anniversary, it even has my best friend's wedding (so I get to see my family and friends, woo woo!!) and if none of the above apply to you, remember, it's the shortest month of the year. Another reason month #2 is so cool is because I have this really nifty calendar at work that not only rips off month by month but allows me to see one month behind and even better, two months in adance! So, this morning, while I was getting satisfaction out of ripping the old months away, guess what month now appears on my calendar? April...do you know what April is? Spring! April is totally a spring month. March...kind of, but April--totally. I tell you all of this because I have been getting huge surges of Spring Fever lately, which is probably another reason I like February--one month closer to spring and summer. (I just found a little bit of peanut butter from breakfast on my coat button...hmmm) So, to any of you feeling the winter blues, no worries, because winter is slowly on its way out. Also, I have a matter of business to discuss. Since I sent out this blog in August, I admittedly failed to post consistenly (or failed to post at all for like three months). Anyhow, I just wanted my viewers to know (at this point, mom and autumn) that I am starting anew. I am going to post weekly. Enough to keep ya'll comin back, but not so much that I begin to run out of things to write about. I am also going to make an effort to post photos and graphics...today is my meager attempt at some graphics. All right, that is all. Have fun welcoming in February!!!

Gross

Since we were in the process of getting over some colds Phil and I were in the mood to spend or Friday evening home. What do we do? Wendy's run. We love Wendy's and have a special place for the Wendy's dollar menu in our hearts. Well, we get home and decided to pop in a movie. As we're scrolling down to see what movie to watch, we see Phil has TiVoed "Super Size Me". He having seen it once before and me never we thought it would be a laugh to watch it while we ate fast food. Needless to say I did not make it all the way through my Jr. Bacon Cheese Burger. For those of you who haven't seen it, it basically shows that if you were to eat three square meals a day from McDonald's, for a month, you would do the same amount of damage to your liver as an alcoholic. Not to mention the way their chicken nuggets are made....ewwwh. That along with their market strategies geared toward children and their priorities for money rather than the health of the nation made me really mad at fast food. And while I sit here fighting the urge to salivate at the though of a medium fry and frosty...I promise to start anew! No more fructose and other artificial flavorings (as well as nutrients). I will cook! And I will be good at it!

Lists

I love making lists. Lists about what I want to buy at the store, lists about my favorites and especially 'to do' lists (I'm really good at those...not so much doing things on the list, but writing up the list--I am the best). I even have a journal dedicated to lists. However, with my love for lists, I am a little surprised I have yet to compose a list of New Year's Resolutions. Well...I guess I've made a little one, but it doesn't count because it wasn't dubbed "My New Year's Resolutions", it just happened to be written down around New Year's. But don't judge. This doesn't mean I am a stagnating human being lacking any sense of goals or direction. I have resolutions and self-improvments rolling around in my head all the time. In fact, I've even started to act on some of them. Not all of them, but some. Like writing in my journal for example. Not my creative journal, a real journal. I have done awesome. So I'm thinking if I write it down and make it an official resolution...will I jinx it? Which brings me to my new New Year's Resolution theory. I'm not going to write them down. I am just going to do it! Be active! And if for some reason I don't follow thru or never start it in the first place...there is no record of it :D

Seattle Storms and Automobile Adventures

Have I mentioned that Phil and I love adventure? We can't seem to get enough of it. In fact, we love it so much, we like doing things that will purposely cause some type of inconvenient situation, just so we can later get a thrill out of the triumph that comes from overcoming harry circumstances. If you are like us...here are some tips. Phil and I have tried each one of these out in the last month and they all work great! 1. Wait for that once-every-three-year Seattle ice storm to stay out late and ignore every snow storm warning because you grew up in Utah and you can handle snow. Yeah, so I'm laughing to myself as my co-workers start packing up at 3 p.m. to go home thinking "Oh come on! It is just a little snow, people!" In fact, I think they are all so silly, I decide to go to Fred Meyer and shop around for awhile (because Phil is at the Seahawks game and I've got time). To my credit, it was not snowing at this point. Just a flurry off and on. Well, I enjoy myself for about an hour and even in the checkout line the cashier lady says, "Can you believe this weather" and again I think to myself...actually I can and it's not that big of a deal. I proceed to push my cart out the door..... All I see is white. At least 3 inches on the ground. Enough snow, that I can barely push my cart to the car, which I had to do with my head down, arms straight like I was pushing a bolder up a hill. I get to my care thinking still! No problem, I've got 4-wheel drive. Which would have been nice if every exit out of the parking lot wasn't blocked by people who were stuck. I then quickly learned and took to heart Seattle snow storms are different from Utah snow storms for the following reasons: 1. People in Seattle don' t know what to do when it snows, lets alone drive in it. 2. There is probably one snow plow in the whole city. 3. There are a lot of trees here, which create two problems. Shade and hills. 4. The climate is just right enough that when it snows, it immediately turns into ice. I thankfully and prayerfully and humbly made it home that night to worry about Phil who was still at the Seahawks game forging a little adventure of his own... 2. Don't charge your cell phone. After my horendous experience that evening. I try to call Phil to come home early only to remember his phone was on its last leg and he would turn it off and save it to call me on his way home. I sat anxiously at home flipping back and forth between the news and the game calling him every five minutes still. While watching the news I discover more about the driving situation that is becoming worse by the second. People stranded on the side of the road who had been waiting for a tow truck since 3 o'clock. Others stuck on the freeway who just decide to start walking in the snow the rest of the way home. Air shots of the freeways packed so tight because no one could get off because so many cars blocking the exits with their stuck and abandoned cars. I finally get a hold of Phil as he is slowly realizing he is entering one of the worst driving situations of his life. He manages to get off the freeway to find himself lost. I am online trying to help him get his bearings. We get a sketchy plan just in case the phone goes dead: he is going to see how far he can get (seeing as we live on a steep hill and everything is freezing more by the second) and then he'll walk the rest of the way. About this time his phone goes dead and I'm left with the saddest images of Phil walking three miles in the snow. I turn on HGTV to numb my worries. I call my mom, I call his mom, anybody willing to listen! Then, to my utter excitment I see Phil calling. I answer and he gets about two sentances out before it goes dead again. Dispair. At this point I throw myself on the couch and start bawling. About a couple hours later Phil walked through the front door. Apparently, there were groups of incredibley nice people at the bottom of rough hills getting people unstuck the whole night. It was because of two of these groups Phil was able to get home, with our car, safe and sound that night. It's amazing what service and a kind heart can do. 3. Pick steep, windy, icy hills for an alternative route home. This is a good one. So after this ice/snow storm, Phil and I play it safe and stay home the next dayand carpool the day after that to work. We even left work early that night to avoid the roads after freezing. But like I say...that was being cautious. So we're pretty close to home but of course there is a lot of traffic, so Phil and I decide to take a "shortcut". We turned on this road both of us had no recollection of, but felt it would land us exactly where we wanted to be. Well, as we drive up the hill it just keeps getting more steep and more icy. Unlike most of the roads, this one remained unthawed. We're following a car to suddently stop at a bend in the road to later find we are part of a long line of basically stuck cars. If they weren't stuck they couldn't go anywhere because of the stuck ones. Well, I get out. Walk up the hill and scope out the scene. Not good. Well then some people up the hill decide it would be a good idea to turn around and go down the hill. No! That is not a good idea on an icy hill. We then proceeded to watch three cars slide down the hill, hit the bend in front of us do a three-sixty and get stuck. Awesome. The road was completely blocked, even if you could go up it. At this point Phil and I are blocked in. We then see one final car slide its way down to hit one of the stuck cars that of course jammed into us. Phil and I watched the whole thing in slowmo. Helpless. Just sitting there with our mouths open. At this point everyone behind us had gone back down the hill. So after getting the man's insurance Phil and I started slowly reversing. My job was to get out everytime someone started to go up the hill and flag them down to tell them to go back. This process was interesting. Many big SUV's were quite rude and blew right by...others were smart and listened. This almost crossed Phil and I's adventure threshold. 4. Lock your keys in your car. This one never fails!! I thought of it first. About five months ago I got to work and had to go pee really bad. Well, the second I shut my door I realized my keys were still in the car. Then, I realized my lights were still on. My dad tells me he now knows a total of two people who have done this...and the other one is my sister. Well, Phil comes and rescues me and jumps the car so I'm good to go. Thanks Phillip. Well, yesterday, Phil wanted to allow me some of the adventure so he gave it a whirl. However, instead of leaving his lights on, he chose to lock the keys in his car on the day Seattle is scheduled to have one of its worst rain/wind storms on record. After two hours of clutching the steering wheel while at one point my engine smoking, I got to Fremont (which is a gorgeous area bytheway, quaint and the same place they taped sleepless in seattle) and back. Now our power is out. For days we're told. This, however, we did not provoke in any way. In fact, with our past streak of adventures, we are trying really hard to do what my mom said, "Just try really hard this time to erh on the side of caution". Well, we're tryin mom! But you never know with us and our adventurous natures!!

Interesting

So I'm back. I'm back to my blog. I keep hoping that we (Phil and myself) will get a web site...and that is the plan...but I'm destined to post and post I will. So I just noticed a few things on my blog as I was making updates. 1) My blog has only been viewed 16 times...that's a little sad. 2) I was born in the Chinese year of the boar. Hello? Why couldn't I have been born in a year with something cool like the dragon? I really hope the fact of me being born in the year of the "boar" doesn't reflect much on myself as a person or else that would be sad too. All right, enough of sad things! I get to go home to see my family in two weeks. Less than two weeks...thirteen days in fact! I am so excited, that I have a hard time focusing on my daily tasks. Speaking of which, I need to get back to work. Love to all of you sixteen people out there (well more like two: mom and autumn, who visted 8 times each). Love!

New on the Job Bloopers

So I was fortunate enough, amid my job search, to snatch a temporary position as receptionist at Corporate Taco Del Mar. The people are nice and the comida perk...really good. Mexican food pretty much all the time. However, during those first few days on the job, any employee is especially prone to making mistakes considering they are not fluent with the company yet. Well, here are a few of my own "New on the Job Bloopers"... 1. So the CEO of Corporate Taco Del Mar is a laid back man and looks about the approximate age of, what I would say, an average CEO. With gray hair and a few wrinkles I would clock our Taco King at a ripe old 50 year's of age, late forties at the earliest. One thing I like about our CEO is that one of my first days here he came in beaming, while carrying a picture of a darling little baby showing it to anybody who was willing to see (which, of course, was the whole office). There is also a wall in the office called "Taco Tots" where a picture of this same baby is located. Well, today he was asking me who was the cutest baby on the "Taco Tots" wall, and immediate panick struck...so I said, the biggest picture right there. To my relief, he replied with a smile, "It is the biggest one, isn't it." Trying to make adoring conversation I asked, "Is that your granddaughter?" Just to interupt him telling me is was his daughter. Yup. He said, "Did you say my granddaughter?" With every ounce of charm I could muster, I said, "Nooohoooo," like he was ridiculous for asking me such a question. He gave a tired smile while shaking his head and walked away. 2. This incident gave me a fit of giggles. So another one of my stressful duties here at Taco Del Mar is to answer the phones. Someone calls, I say my bit (Hello! Taco Del Mar, this is Jasmine, how can I help you?) They tell me who they want, I call that person to see if they are available and proceed with the transfer or voicemail. Well--A man calls and he wants to talk to Erin, I ask who is calling and he says, Marien. So when I call Erin to see if she is available, I say, "Hey Erien, are you available to talk to Marien?" I then made an attempt to explain myself through my giggles to confused Erien, while poor Marien was waiting on the other line. (What is it about my brain that latches so quickly on to similar tones in the English language? ie Jasmine Sasmine)

Favorite Books

What are you favorite books? I just spent the last two months reading Harry Potter 1-6. Although I was a little late to be jumping on the bandwagon, it is a bandwagon worth jumping on late!!! I enjoyed my Harry Potter reading days so much that I am currently going through what my sister calls "Harry Potter withdrawls". No book seems good enough anymore. I start something and I just sigh wishing I knew what was going on with my friends, Hermione, Harry and Ron. Owell, I must go on, but I need the best of the best, so give me what you've got. What books have you read that are on your "great" list. I am currently reading "Ender's Game" by Orson Scott Car. It's a young adult sci fi. Pretty good thus far, but after that's done I need to know where to turn next, so don't leave me hangin!

Ode to my Sister

Ode to my sister, My gal pal and friend so true She alone, besides myself, Is the other to check my blogspot too! Loyalty is not her only attribute, Because she always offers water And when you're sad, She'll console you about your lack of Harry Potter She is beautiful inside and out While treating everyone so wonderful and lacey, And finally, my amazing sister, finds the time to be a great mom to Gracie! by Jasmine Shorten

Eye Candy

As earlier mentioned, I'm a new resident to the Seattle area and my husband fortunately came upon some free Seahawks tickets. I, never having been to a professional football game, was pretty excited about this. I'm not a big sports guru or anthing, but free NFL tickets? Sure, you bet. Well, being a girl who loves dance and all things girly, I was looking forward to seeing the so called "Sea Gals" (apparently, a sad attempt to make a spin-off of Seagulls). Any way the whole game I gradually became more and more disgusted by this effort to provide the men in the crowd something to google at. They are not cheerleaders, they are exotic dancers replacing poles with pom poms. Perhaps that is a little harsh, but I think to myself, what is their point, their goal if you will. It certainly isn't to guide the crowd into supportful cheers. Wait, they do entertain. That they do. They entertain with sensual moves instead of cool, tricky stunts. There is no denying they are beautiful girls, but all the more a reason for them to go make something of themselves. So, to all of those "professional" cheerleaders out there: be beautiful to the world instead of the drunk men in the stands. Be positive representatives of women everywhere and what beauty should be instead of telling women that being a size 2, fake-baked and dyed is important. I kept telling my husband these things throughout the game. I'm sure he enjoyed it.

My Pic

Look! It's Marylin me! I want to upload it to my profile, but for the life of me, i can't figure it out . Owell.

Welcome!

Hello! And welcome to my blog spot! I created this blog so I could have a place to jot down events, my thoughts and maybe a short story here and there. I hope to one day have my own website, but for now, this will do. I welcome (encourage) comments and posts of your own. Quickly add my blog to your favorite list, so you will remember to visit here often. Much love.
